Juan Díaz es capaz de reformar una casa entera para abrir un ventanal justo en el muro desde el que se ve el mar y el paso de las estaciones del año, una casa asomada a un paisaje de aquellos que a todos nos gustaría guardar para siempre cuando, en cualquier momento, aparece la marina perfecta.
Y el tiempo se detiene.
Y todo es espacio.
Juan es un gran cazador y su territorio abarca no solo la costa cantábrica, desde la playa de Salinas a la de Hendaya, sino valles y montes asturianos, páramos de Castilla o de la Patagonia o rincones y canales de Venecia. Para cobrar tal clase de piezas, huidizas por naturaleza, no utiliza mas que agua por toda munición. Agua sobre agua sobre agua.
Este hombre es un rebelde y está empeñado en renovar la acuarela y rescatarla de la moda, de lo “bonito” y, sobre todo, de lo pintoresco. Y lo hace saltándose aquellas reglas del género que limitan la dignidad o el valor de la obra. Ni la paleta, ni el soporte ni el formato, nada respeta si no está al servicio de la creación en libertad. Un día de invierno en Gijón, un paseo por la playa de San Lorenzo, desde el náutico al Rinconín, cabe en apenas 40 cm de alto por 405 de largo. Y San Giorgio, visto al atardecer desde San Marcos, en 138 cm de alto por 25 de ancho. Así son sus pinturas, escenas mas horizontales que el horizonte mismo o profundamente verticales, dípticos, cuadrípticos, polípticos, esculturas… pecados mortales para los ortodoxos de la disciplina.
No hay mas que escucharle hablar de la elección correcta del peso, el grano y el color del papel (Arches, Fabriano, Fontenay, o el fabricado a mano en San Sebastián…) ver cómo administra el color, la profundidad de la transparencia, la variedad de la mancha o el trazo o la unidad de la luz, para comprender que lo que hace Juan, aunque parezca lo contrario, es pura abstracción.
Por eso uno puede entrar en cualquiera de sus cuadros y darse un buen paseo por dentro, de una punta a la otra, con los pantalones remangados mojándose los pies. O ir derechito a tomar un Bellini, o dos, en el piso de arriba del Harry’s Bar.
No hay que olvidar la gabardina. Correrá el agua.
